Microsoft Navision, Axapta or Great Plains - ERP Selection for Large Corporation

To select from Navision, Axapta and Great Plains it is very important to first find out the need for the ERP. Navision and Great Plains are famous in Europe and US and it can be scaled for large organizations.

Need for customization and database: The organization which requires high customization or unique business functionalities may go for AX but its implementation may get expensive.

The selection of database is also very important.GP comes with only SQL Server and Navision can be linked to native C/Side. The companies that require automated reports can used the ERP which can be linked to SQL Server.

Implementation: Implementation cycle of Axapta has been longest but Axapta can provide a number of functionalities and it suits the requirement of certain industries. Great Plains is easy to set up and use, and Navision is mostly suitable for mid-sized organization.

Comparison of the three ERPs

Dynamics Axapta: Microsoft Axapta is basically designed for large and mid-sized manufacturing units and it was initially adopted by European countries. The software has a strong competition with Microsoft Navision in the mid market section although the user interface of both the software is graphical user interface.

Initial version of the software was very difficult to customize but the new versions have the features of customization and can adapt to changing needs of various organization.
It provides solution for key industries in distribution, manufacturing, retail, public sector, and services.

The initial version of Axapta had best manufacturing module of all the other ERP products of Microsoft. Even the distribution module of the software is highly developed and it can provide centralized solution to companies having units across many countries.

Dynamics Great Plains: Great Plains is designed to suit the requirement of small and midsized companies but the latest version of eEnterprise can be implemented at large organizations. GP is localized for English speaking organizations and hence it can be implemented in Europe, Canada, Australia, South Africa, South East Asia and Australia.

GP can provide solution to companies having multiple branches across various geographical regions. It specializes in manufacturing and best suits nonprofit cooperation.

It can provide web based solution to multiunit organizations. It can provide the logistics support for freight forwarding, accounting, project management, CRM and it can also be used in retail stores for transactions.

GP was one of the first ERP to delivers the accounting package and it provided multi user functionalities. It could run on windows 32 bits and it uses the functionalities of Microsoft SQL Server for database.

The software is highly insightful which can provide analysis and give fast and relevant access to information. It can provide fast, efficient and flexible deployment and it has a familiar user interface.

Dynamics Navision: Axapta joined Navision to provide combined features. Navision is ideal for small and midsized companies. In general Navision is considered more expensive but it takes more time to implement Axapta as compared to Navision. Axapta support more features and therefore the software gets overloaded. Navision can provide solution for organization having 20 to 200 users, but it even supports increased number of users to 1,000.
